ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS / 24 – 26 SEPTEMBER 2014 Daily Deltas, Thursday edition, 25 September 2014
Thursday brought a wide variety of sessions about delta science and practice
The speakers during the plenary, Stéphane Hallegatte (World Bank) and Stephan Ritter (ARCADIS), made both interesting, but different points. Hallegatte pointed to the unfairness of relating climate damage to GDP: the poor are often hit hardest, but their damages don't add up to high numbers in terms of money.  Ritter in turn stressed the important role of companies in adaptation to climate change.

Finances also played a role in the Round Table about community based adaptation - which actually should better be called community driven adaptation, reflecting the active role needed from the community. Communities should take control of  their own development, but the financing system is not geared towards community driven adaptation.

Today the winners of the International Climate Adaptation Business Challenge were announced, hosted by Rens de Jong (BNR Nieuwsradio). Winners Jelmer van Veen (the Netherlands) and  Priska Prasetya (Indonesia) plan to turn waste water into three valuable products: nutrient rich irrigation water, high quality compost and fish. The duo receive € 25.000,- for implementing their business plan.
