Get inspired: Winners of the Business Challenge 2013
Salty potatoes
Arjen de Vos from Zilt Proefbedrijf Texel was the winner of the Climate Adaptation Business Challenge 2013. He won the first prize of 25,000 euro to invest in his farm where he experiments with potatoes that grow on brackish water. ‘Winning this prize was an acknowledgement for our work. It felt that we were finally taken seriously,’ says Arjen. ‘I used the money to lease three hectares of land to scaling up potato production. We also invested in seaweed to experiment with fertilizing. Hopefully next year the saline potato will be ready for the market.’
The salt tolerant potato is the main focus in Arjen’s business model, but he also tests 120 other species on their salt tolerance: barley, carrots, onions, cabbage and beets. And he aims to go abroad with his products and is currently working on a proposal to go to Pakistan. ‘Salinization of agricultural land is a much greater problem in Pakistan than it is in The Netherlands. If we get permission to start testing in Pakistan, there are 4 million hectares of salinized farm land waiting for us.’
Nature Today
Arnold van Vliet was the winner of the third prize of last year’s Challenge. He won 15,000 euro to develop the online platform ‘Nature Today’ where news from nature is published by top-biologists from all over the world. Nature Today will also provide location based information about topical developments in nature like mosquito activity or hay fever risks.
‘The prize enabled me to make a functional design of the website and some apps. After the Business Challenge I got access to the Acceleration programme of Climate-KIC. It was an intense programme in which I worked out my business model. I was really forced to get out of my comfort zone, and think about things like a ‘business model canvas’, a focus in my plans and how to make profit with this idea.’ Arnold hopes to launch Nature Today in the beginning of 2015.
